Official figures

Which Official Figures We Use

We print a figure only when it passes all of these. A person or a script found the number on the page or PDF it links to. The publisher is a government, statistics office, tourism board or airport authority, so compilers and travel sites do not count. It is from 2022 or later. It is not larger than the figure for the area around it, and a jump of more than half from an earlier year goes to a person to review.

Countries mostly use UN Tourism's series of international arrivals, through Our World in Data, because it is one definition across borders. Cities and states use their own publisher, so definitions vary: some count day trips, some count only guests at registered accommodation, and some count nights. Each page gives the definition beside the figure, and our rankings only compare counts of the same kind.

Where a place has no figure of its own, its page gives the figure for the state or country around it, under that name. AirROI does not estimate tourists.

Airbnb estimates

How the Airbnb Estimates Are Made

AirROI collects public Airbnb listing data every month and estimates each home's stays from it. These are estimates, not Airbnb's records, which AirROI has no access to. Each town's figures add up its homes, and each larger area adds up its towns.

Nights are stays times the typical stay, and a town's typical stay is the one its market page prints. For a town that is one multiplication. For a state or country, each town is multiplied on its own and the results added, so a resort's long stays count at their own length.

A worked example: Las Vegas

Airbnb stays, estimate, 12 months to October 2026
95,621
Typical stay
5.83 nights
Airbnb nights, estimate
557,577

A town's typical stay is its yearly average when that average sits inside the range of the town's months. When it does not, the middle month stands in. Las Vegas is one of these. Its sum uses 5.83 nights and its pages say 5.8 nights.

The range and the middle month draw on two years of months, so the stay can still sit outside a place's latest 12. Those pages leave out the by-month stay figures, so nothing contradicts the stay they print, and keep the month ranks.

Guest origin comes from reviews, so it describes guests who left one. Booked ahead is the average days between a booking and its check-in. A place under 2,000 Airbnb homes at country level carries a small sample label, and its figures should be read as rough.

Outside checks

How the Estimates Compare With Outside Figures

Worldwide nights. Adding up every town gives 559,835,037 Airbnb nights for the 12 months to October 2026, about 560 million. Airbnb reported 533.0 million nights and seats booked in 2025. The two cover different periods and our figure is an estimate, so read them as the same size, not as a match.

Busiest months. Against Eurostat's monthly nights for European areas, our month pattern correlates at 0.93 to 0.99, with the same peak month in 12 of the 12 areas tested. Our swing between busy and quiet months runs flatter than Eurostat's, which is why the pages lead with a rank.

Places

How Places Are Added Up

A larger area's total adds the towns AirROI tracks in it, so it is a floor: homes in places we do not track are left out. Only towns whose data is current for the 12 months to October 2026 count.

Places often appear under several names: Pattaya and Pattaya City, or a Bangkok district beside Bangkok. We merge these into one row with a reviewed alias table, and a merged city's figures include its districts, so the row and the city's page show the same number. A country or state total does not change when its towns merge.

Updates

How Often the Pages Change

Airbnb figures refresh every month with a new 12-month period, and every page's Updated date is the day it was built. Official figures are rechecked every year in March. Each page's method note says when its figures were last checked.

FAQ

Questions About the Method

Can I quote AirROI tourism statistics?

Yes, with the source and the period. Official figures belong to their publishers, so cite the publisher linked on the page. Cite AirROI for the Airbnb estimates, and call them estimates.

Are Airbnb stays the same as tourists?

No. A stay is one booking on Airbnb, and it may hold one guest or eight. Many travellers never use Airbnb, and some guests live nearby. AirROI never divides one count by the other, because the result would not mean anything.

Why does a place show a figure for a larger area?

Some towns have no yearly count of their own in a form that can be checked. The page then gives the state or country figure under that name, and the town's part of the Airbnb stays in that larger area.

Why do pages lead with a rank for the months?

Our monthly order matches official monthly figures closely, but our swing between busy and quiet months runs flatter than theirs. So the order can be trusted further than the size of the gap. The words give the order, and the month table adds each month's share of Airbnb nights.

How often do the numbers change?

Airbnb figures update every month with a new 12-month period. Official figures are rechecked each year in March, after most publishers release their annual numbers. The list of pages itself stays fixed.
